Bio

John was a first-generation UC Davis transfer student from Santa Rosa Junior College. He graduated in 1974 with a B.S. in Biochemistry and earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Biophysics in 1977. John’s graduate research was supported in part by a research fellowship through the College (then Division) of Biological Sciences. His undergraduate research experiences and the graduate research fellowship were essential to his success. He is serving the CLC to help other students achieve success.

John is Professor Emeritus of molecular and cellular physiology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and he focused his research and teaching on cellular transport proteins and processes of the gastrointestinal tract. He published approximately 100 research papers and 13 patents. In addition, he spent many years on basic science research for a pharmaceutical agent that is currently on the market. He trained high school students, undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty from around the globe.

John is an avid supporter of programs serving first-generation, underrepresented and underserved students. He was active in service to his communities, as a member of the Greenhills Volunteer Fire Department, Chair of Faculty Senate and Chair of the Ohio Faculty Council, which advised the chancellor of the State of Ohio and was President of the Ohio State Conference of the AAUP (American Association of University Professors). He also spent many years as Chair of both the Cell and Molecular and Epithelial Transport Sections of the American Physiological Society. He recently served on the Board of Education of Winton Woods City Schools and is currently College of Biological Science AvenueB external Advisory Board Chair.

John hopes to assist in all of the goals of the Campaign Leadership Council and the Dean of the College, with special interests in raising funds for student research and helping students obtain professional degrees. He is also interested in helping to raise funds for unique teaching and research facilities and strategic hires. John lives in Cincinnati Ohio with his wife and co-worker of 40 years, Professor Emerita Danuta H. Malinowska.
